I need beauty school lessons

I have never been a "girly-girl". I have never been one spend much effort on my hair. I pretty much wash my hair, brush it and let it air dry. (That explains so much, I know.)

Now that I have a little girl, I want her to be as cute as possible. Yesterday I dediced to put her hair up. (Ok, wait, let me back track- in December I was laughed at because I didn't know where my friend got the clear rubber bands. Apparently even my husband new that they were clear ponytail holders!)

I bought some of the clear ponytail holders, which seemed perfect because they said "Ouchless" and because they seemed small enough to hold the tiny bit of hair that Elsie has.

LET ME JUST TELL YOU - they are not ouchless, if your mom pulls your hair when she puts them in.

These were really, really hard for me to get in. (Go head, let me some tips if you have any. Elsie would appreciate it!)

Here she is recovering.

Thankfully, chocolate milk helps make everything better.

Here are some of her brother's comments:

David: "She REALLY looks like a Toddler now!"
Thomas didn't have much to say about it. I did catch him trying to "touch them" (pull on them) a few times.
Jonathan (as he got in the car when I picked him up from school):
"Why did you put her hair like that?"
"No, seriously, why did you put her hair like that??"
"It is going to be really easy for me to pull her hair now."

Here is one of my favorite pictures.

Oh, this post made me laugh...but not at your daughters painful expense!!

What I would do to make her hair pretty is get little tiny bows that can stick on fine hair!!! If you're worried she may try to take them off and put them in her hair, then you can just keep using those "ouchless" rubberbands, but pull it down more toward the middle so that her hair lays flat. I used to do that to my little one when her hair started to grow out. Make sure you part it on the side though. :)

Poor girl! :) That last picture is too cute.

I have a hard time with the rubberbands too. Everyone seems to do it better than me... even Kyle. I usually just stick with the clip bow on thr side of her parted hair.

If i do the piggy tails or whatever with the rubberbands, I end up squeezing Ellie between my knees to hold her still, while working my MAGIC (ha!) as fast as possible.

It will be easier when they have more hair. I'm hoping.

Oh, I'm not a girly girl, either! We use the 'ouchless' ponytail holders, too. They take a little getting used to. When I take them out, I just 'pop' them and unwrap rather than trying to take them out the usual way. My little girl isn't totally girly, either. Her preschool class has 5 boys - and her. She is just starting to get picky about her clothes and shoes, sometimes wants to carry a 'purse' or doll, and always likes to pick out her hair barrettes. And all of this since the preschool year began, with the class of 5 boys and one girl - go figure!

Oh the days of the fountain do! That is what we called the pony on top of the head for the time that Hope wore it. I tried it on the side, a pigtail version, clips, barrettes, bows... nothing seem to last all day like the fountain do. Embrace the silly cuteness of the fountain- this too shall pass. =0)

Ok, first of all you did a great job...she looks really cute! Brooklyn always cries when she sees me holding any "hair pretties". (They are never truly "ouchless".) I just tell her over and over again that it hurts to be beautiful.

Good job on the rookie pony. My hubby is a stay at home daddy and never in a million years did I think he didn't even know how to put the rubber band in my daughters hair. The first time he did it himself and took her out someone said to him "oh, her hair looks like a fountain." He took that as a compliment. :)

Great Job, Jane Anne! I don't think that anything with the hair can be truly ouchless either. I have found that if I do the girls hair while they are distracted either eating breakfast or even sometimes standing on a stool brushing their teeth or just watching me it goes easier. Those little bitty rubber bands do take a lot of getting use to. I break them to get them out. Though there are times that they will slide out easily too. You can look back at pictures and see how I did Elizabeth's hair when she was younger. I never found barrettes that seemed to stay in her hair well so we did the ponytail thing alot or just kept moving her hair back with barrettes and repinning all day long. We lost a lot of barrettes and bows due to this. Congratulations on the hair do. It does really look so cute.

I love the pictures they brought a smile to my face just because we all have been there. Barrettes never really stay for us. I always set Elli on the counter in a bathroom so she can see what I am doing. I found if I don't both of us get frusterated. I would part it and do something on each side usally piggy tail. They also have small thiner ouchless rubberbands that work really well in thin hair. I thought it was funny that the boy could now pull her hair easier. Good luck and when she get a little older and starts to fight you on you fixing her hair Just tell her that she is the one pulling her own hair and if she held still it wont hurt. :) works for us she climbs on the counter to get her hair fixed everyday.
Let us know how it goes.

She is adorable no matter how her hair is, but...I have no suggestions, because my girls always scream when I am doing their hair. *sigh* I have a sensitive head too.
The crying picture was priceless...she was not happy with those pony tail holders. Poor baby.

I'm not sure I'm the best person to give you advice on the girlie hair-dos! Samantha had so much hair since the day she was born but I really didn't start doing anything with it until she was about a year old. By that point, it was piggy's all the time. But she had bangs! With Savanah, I knew from a pretty young age that I didn't want to cut bangs and I'm SO HAPPY that I stuck with that. Her hair is pretty thin and fin also and so we got the little tiny hair clips and used those. Of course, they do tend to fall out so you are "redoing the do" quite often and losing hair clips at an alarming rate but it is much easier. As far as the pony on the top of the head, I don't think there is a cuter hairstyle out there for a baby and I say work for as long as you can. Savanah's one year baby pictures have her hair like that. One pony coming straight up off the top of her head and I LOVED IT!!! I have no idea though how to make it hurt less. My oldest used to scream and cry every time I brushed her hair so having them cry when I put a pony tail in was just no big deal - I was used to it!

Jane Anne,
Do you know the trick of doing a little pony tail and pulling it back through the middle of itself? When my girls were little the haircutter would do that and it was always really cute. I don't think I can explain it, but if you are really coming here in a couple of weeks, I can show you.
