What-in-the-World Wednesday

Monday my husband picked up a book at the library that was reserved for my 8 year old son.

Tuesday morning at breakfast, my son, beaming with excitement, thanks me for asking Daddy to get the book.

Tuesday morning before school, my son opens the book and starts reading.

Tuesday afternoon on the short drive home from school, my son finishes the 278 page book.

Tuesday afternoon, my son willingly waits for me to get the camera because he is so excited about finishing his book.

He read a 278 page book in one day at school.

I asked him if he got any school work done at school.

His teacher's only complaint about my son during conferences was that he reads so much that she has to remind him not to read during class time.

I drilled him with questions.

He said that he just read during one recess. (That's the deal I had to make with him a few weeks back when he was reading Narnia: "Play at least 1 recess.")

He said that he got to read when his class was working on spelling because he did the work the day before.

He said that he read in all of his "spare time".

He said that he is not allowed to read during lunch.

He said that he still paid attention during "sharing time" because he can read and listen.

I asked him if his teacher had to ask him to stop reading.

His answer?

He had a substitute.

J is the exact type of kiddo we subs LOVE!!!! And he's right....there are certain kids that I let read most of the day b/c they finish the work left for me SO quickly. Isn't it great to have boys that love to read? I have to get right in Ben's face sometimes and ask him to STOP reading! Plus, Ben's vision changed dramatically in the last year and I think it is because he reads so much :) He reads so fast, I can't keep up! I really think he and Jonathan would get along GREAT! :) Congrats to Jonathan on finishing the book in one day! I bet he's looking forward to the next day he has a substitute :)

Congratulations on him reading the book. This is also a sad comment on how little learning or work is actually done during a public school day. Yea for him! Boo for public education.

THAT IS FUNNY! Love that he loves to read. Brendan is the same way and has read many books in one or 2 days! And I love that he asked you to get a camera to document it!

What book?? He's obviously had some great teachers! How does he or you choose books for him to read?

What a great accomplishment! It's so neat to see how proud of themselves kids are for reading!! Noelle is reading The Lightening Thief series and is so proud to be reading such big books. And Natalie is reading The Hobbit, which I didn't read until college.

Gotta love a sub! hahaha

What is the book? My 8 year old is all over The Diary of a Wimpy Kid books. He is reading them fast, but not in one day for sure!

That is exactly how Kayla was/is. She spent most of second grade figuring out ways to get out of going to recess! Is it Edge Chronicles he's reading? Owen has read some of them. We read their other series together (Hugo Pepper, Fergus Crane and something else...?)and really enjoyed them!

I love it!!!! Savanah is the exact same way. We had a book fair at school and the book she got was done a couple of hours later but half that time was spent in Costco w/o her book!!! Crazy kids!!!! ;~)
